College Dropouts Face Increased Chance of Obesity

Dropping out of college before finishing your degree could result in an unhealthy habit of over eating and a lack of exercise. Statistics have shown that college dropouts have nearly 33% higher probability of becoming over weight than their graduating peers. Could obesity be directly related to education level or are there related symptoms that both obese adults and college dropouts share?

Nutritionists believe the cause of obesity in America today is portion size of meals. While there has been a dramatic increase in portion sizes over the past fifty years this fact does nothing to validate the college dropouts’ increased chance of obesity. There may be other underlying causes such as low self-esteem, lack of self-confidence, or possibly depression that must be considered.

The number one cause for college dropouts is financial pressure followed by academic disqualification. Both of these reasons could cause negative emotional and psychological traumas that have to be dealt with by the average college dropout. Eating out of boredom, sadness, or anger is common in obese adults and is often spurred on by the same type of traumas college dropouts frequently face.

Emotional and psychological traumas can take years to overcome and sometimes require professional help. These types of events really can’t be dealt with by education alone and a number of times they are overlooked completely. People suffering these types of symptoms time and time again fall back to food and binge eating to cope with what they may have labeled as ‘life’.

One could argue that an increased understanding about the causes and effects of obesity could be enough to reduce the number of overweight adults in America today, but sometimes knowledge of a disease just isn’t enough to counter the factors that cause it.
